Watched it while in a slump about something or other (probably uni-related) and it really engaged me, despite being in many ways a slightly naff kid's film. The serious parts pulled it through nicely. Bought and read the book as a result of watching it, after realising it's quite a well-known classic in America.

Rewatched it over the 23rd/24th of September 2012. Wasn't sure if I wanted to, and it was pretty cringey sometimes, with awkward acting, and the second half didn't have the hit it did the first time around. But it's still pretty powerful in some ways.
