First watch (July 2021)[]

Watched the first 3 episodes on July 22nd 2021, during my summer holiday. I had recently watched Luca and the buzz online about it representing queer romance reminded me of Hikaru no Go, which lead to me discovering this new version. I really enjoyed the first episodes, particularly the actor of young 'Akira' who acted super convincingly. Looking forward to watching the rest!

Finished about 3 weeks later. It was definitely really good - although they changed a lot of it on the surface, much was the same and you could tell they really loved the original. I really enjoyed seeing it in live action and found the story moving as before. Hikaru and Akira's characters and relationship were subtly different and I prefer the anime's, and I think this version was sometimes too heavy-handed which made me slightly cringing. That being said, the anime was probably pretty tiresome at times too I expect, and I'm remembering it with rose-tinted glasses. One change I did find baffling was the decision to play rinky dink chill elevator music when they played Go, as if it was just like shopping at the mall, all friendly and relaxing. In the anime, by contrast, the Go games were dramatic battles which really sucked you in.
