2004 remake of the original 1986 Metroid on NES, this one for the Gameboy Advance.
First play (August 8-13th 2021)[]
Played it after finishing Super Metroid, my first Metroid game, in the wake of Metroid Dread's announcement. I had Super on the Switch's virtual console so I could play that for free, but I decided to buy this one (and Metroid Fusion) which I had to do on my old Wii U's virtual console. It's a pain to find these games!!
It was a SHORT game. I couldn't believe how quickly I got to Ridley - I think I completed the original game's storyline in about 3 hours of gameplay, with the added final sequence taking about another hour. The final sequence (which I presume wasn't in the original game) was good fun and I thought it was a smart design choice to have you use all of your acquired skills as a player to first sneak through the ship and then get your fully powered suit and kick ass. However, I'm aware that that part of the game isn't really itself very "metroidvania", and part of my interest in this series is working out if I like metroidvanias in general. So it was... kinda fun? but not very long or challenging? Maybe not really hugely "metroidvania"?
Maybe 6/10 (0, slightly higher than Super, which annoyed the hell out of me too many times).
