I thought it was going to be a really solid, interesting and thought-provoking 80s horror/thriller. The scene with the water tentacle crops up fairly regularly, I guess it made an impression on people at the time. In mid-March 2016 I hadn't watched a film for ages, so I thought I'd give this a shot.
At first I just got a really strong Alien vibe from it, the down-to-earth meat-and-potatoes crew working in an isolated environment driven by the need for their next paycheck. The feeling got stronger until I was rolling my eyes at the similarities, and wondering if it meant I was no longer able to enjoy 80s films. By about an hour or so in I was bored and disinterested.
I'm sitting here now approaching the 2-hour mark and I'm tempted to turn it off, except that I'm near the end now. It's boring as hell. The acting and action sequences are cliché and laughable. I don't think I'm a fan of James Cameron.
Update: Just finished. My god, I wish I had turned it off. It was like someone watched all the awesome movies of the late 70s and 80s and tried to make the ultimate version. And failed terribly.
